The award is delivered by the Aziz Foundation, a charitable foundation which works to provide postgraduate opportunities for outstanding students from British Muslim backgrounds.

Established with the goal of reducing equality gaps and promoting social mobility among British Muslims, the foundation works alongside universities to foster educational environments where Muslim students are valued and empowered to fulfil their true potential.

The University of York is a preferred partner of the foundation, who provide Masters scholarships to outstanding British Muslim students who have a high level of commitment to the community, as well as the aspirations to lead in their respective field.

Earlier in the year, the University of York hosted the first ever Muslim Friendly Universities conference in partnership with the Aziz Foundation and the Yorkshire Consortium for Equity in Doctoral Education (YCEDE), which seeks to improve access and participation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic people in postgraduate research study across Yorkshire. The conference brought together EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) practitioners, policy experts, and researchers from a range of disciplines to explore the nuanced challenges faced by Muslim students and staff in higher education, all with the goal of improving equality in higher education.

The University of York is committed to becoming the University of Opportunity, where every student is empowered to access, achieve and succeed at York.
